if there is no previous primer then just sand it down good enough to where a new coat of primer will hold good, when sanding with the 60 grit i used a small sander, but with the 320, and 400 i did it...

Oh and all i used was a high heat primer, not necessary but its all i had, and then used valspar spray paint, very good spray paint for cheap. i think 3.00 dollars a can.

I didn't, with the textured surface I figured it didn't need it. I just cleaned it really well and let it dry before I used the primer
