It turns out the gas milage regulation are based on square footage of usable space between the wheels. Yep... has nothing to do with weight or use of the vehicle. Of course a 4 door long bed will get worse gas milage. So the USA let it get worse gas milage and require the shorter lighter truck to get way better milage then possible.
The rules are so strict that Dodge and Toyota decided to stop building regular cabs all together. Many people are saying we are nearing the end of all Regular Cabs

My employer has about 3000 vans and we were buying 1/2 tons and GM stopped making halves - goes against CAFE now we get 3/4 tons - and they do not go against CAFE gotta love the games
