It had a good deal less hp than the GTO, yes. And the GTO was a good .5 second faster in the 1/4 mile. Good example.
But the other two cars you mentioned don't make the Stang look underpowered. It's actually neck-and-neck with the Charger in the 1/4 despite the hp difference, and the 350z is a bad example. It had LESS hp and torque than the Stang until 2007, and even then the Stang still has a good bit more torque. And the Stang weighs less too! So I don't see how a heavier car with less hp and torque can make the Mustang look "underpowered".
