You DO NOT remove that amount. All that is needed is a saw cut, no material needs to be removed.

Gotcha! Thanks for clarifying. I now see that flanges slip over the cut crossmember and stub so the cutoff crossmember piece can be mated back together with the stubs at the cut line.
