A traditional exhaust system (one that is not a straight pipe style system) has a muffler (the final box you are thinking of) in order to control the volume of the exhaust leaving the vehicle. They do not treat the exhaust in any way or make it any less toxic. The only component in an exhaust system that treats the exhaust gas in any way is a catalytic converter (more commonly called a "cat").
In the GMMG system the traditional muffler has been replaced with an enlarged pipe segment with chambers in it (the indents in the cross over pipes) to help control the volume of the exhaust while causing as minimal resistance to the flow of the exhaust gases (back pressure) as possible. Remember that some back pressure is actually necessary for the modern day engine to run at optimal efficiency. However the amount necessary is significantly less then what a stock exhaust system introduces into the exhaust system.

It 's bound to have probs running on the street with all that noise though. Well at least here we have - the other day the police stopped me because they THOUGHT my exhaust pipes were TOO BIG therefore they WOULD do a lot of noise. It 's a good thing those came with ISO standards for the noise lvls.
