Don't do the sharpie.
MY suggestion is to get some yellow rit dye. Pour a bit out into a bowl of water to dilute it, and then rub it onto the stitch carefully with a q-tip, and wipe it off the leather. Let it soak in. Will turn the stitching yellow without messing up the leather.
