I understand where you're coming from. When GM first released all the specs I was a bit upset to see that those interested in the manuals couldn't get AFM (although I understand it wouldn't work).
However, once you've mastered the stick you should be able to get the same fuel savings as the auto L99. It should also be a bit cheaper because, if I remember all the literature correctly, the automatic is still considered an "option" that would up the price a bit. And frankly I don't see paddle-shifters equaling the fun of a true automatic.
In short the auto L99 will cost you a bit more up front probably, won't save you that much more fuel, and will limit the amount of fun you can have with a V8.
It would be more convenient in traffic though...
