I would recommend a tune then. If you were to go with Dynosteve, for instance, you buy the handheld from him and get free tune updates for life. This way if you do decide to install further mods later on, it won't cost you any more for tuning.
Completely disabling AFM and being able to adjust shift point/firmness as well as torque management will yield a major driveability improvement.
