When I was your age I walked 100 miles to school every day, uphill in both directions...
Seriously though, I did save a lot of money doing all the basic maintenance myself when I was in college and for decades since then...thousands of dollars. You don't need a garage, particularly if you live in Southern California! As for what to service, I would go by the owner's manual. That means, unless you have been racing, you really don't need to change the differential fluid or the transmission fluid right now.
