For almost 20 years my daily was non-American motorcycles so I'm hard-wired to spin motors. I did an experiment with realtime MPG displays. The same road at the same speed was more efficient in 5th than 6th. That doesn't mean that observation holds in all situations.

I break out in hives and a panicked cold sweat when RPMs drop below 2000. It's engine abuse. Now if I was driving a semi-truck diesel, then sure I'd surf between 800-1500.
