TT you don't really need the added benefit of the VVT in my opinion. if you were NA it makes a bigger difference. While it will still be better performance wise you just don't need it. Many shops get rid of it as it is harder to tune, more things to go wrong. The more moving parts in the equation the more weak points. AFM definitely get rid of though failures all day long with that. I am fairly certain you can dump the AFM and keep the VVT if you like though. Not 100% sure as I never had either being an LS3.
