I owned a Z/28 and currently own a GT350. I tracked the Z/28 and I track the GT350. (primary use)
I've often wondered the same thing Highrevving asked... why has the Z/28's value been so sleepy?
I have no idea.
There were maybe 3 people who approached me on the street that knew what the Z/28 was. 1801 cars produced... 1801! With that number alone I would have thought they would see faster appreciation especially with this current market.
The Z/28 has appreciated about the same as my "base" GT350. The only GT350Rs that I've seen go "crazy" are the very low mileage ones with emphasis on the "Heritage" models. So yes -- I agree much of the spike is due in large part to Ford's marketing and playing off the history with Carroll Shelby, the GT40, etc.
The Z/28 is a stouter built car. Fewer overall issues. (mainly electronic) I don't know why that is as Ford certainly understands how to build automobiles. I have no knowledge of the "regular" Mustangs and Camaros.
40 or 50 years from now I have to imagine the 2014/15 Z/28 will be a very valuable piece of history. So too, a well preserved GT350R Heritage.
Sometimes I think we just need to give credence to the general overall population and in this case -- more people like the Ford Mustang. All-time production figures tend to back that up.
