I've had a few diesels over the years but always 3/4 or 1 tons. I hated smelling like a diesel mechanic after every stop for fuel and screwing around with def. I said I'd never buy another. I just bought a GMC Denali with the 6.2l but not for towing. I'm done doing that since moving north and getting rid of my cars I'd take to NSRA and Goodguys shows.
I don't know anything about the GM 5.3l but I wasn't happy towing with a Ram 5.7l. Just not enough ummph.
If you're looking at a little open trailer, I would guess either will do fine.
