BUT how do i tell what rpm my tranny will stay in driving around the city at say 36 mph? not knowing which gear the auto will choose.
i guess at that point i could/should use paddle shifters if i have to avoid the drone

This is what I used to do when I had my "drone masters" on the car. Just have to shift down a gear so increase the rpm a little to get past that "drone zone".
