TR-6060: Aftermarket clutch and flywheel kits?
Does anyone have any experience with any generic, aftermarket clutch and/or flywheel kits? Seems like I’ve been seeing a fair amount of them on eBay, and they range from like OEM to “OEM+”, and like Stages 1 through 4. I figured up to “Stage 2” would be something I might want, if I’m looking for something to handle a bit more power/torque and take some aggressive driving. I figured the OEM or OEM+ would be the most comfortable, and would probably handle up to 475-500 WHP, as long as I don’t constantly launch on it hard from a dead stop, or are drag racing often (ex: pre-loading the clutch).
All the single clutch kits past “Stage 3”, are all “puck” style racing clutches. They’re sprung, but definitely something you wouldn’t wanna drive on the street, or as a daily driver, by any means.. I’d probably cough up the dough for installing some kind of twin disc clutch setup, which I’ve heard is somewhat daily driveable. Was debating the McLeod RST, but some people say the RXT isn’t any different. I’m just hoping I don’t randomly just get a 900+ HP capacity clutch kit, that’s totally unnecessary, and will make my frequent driving experiences a hassle.
I also hear a lot of information regarding the OEM clutch slave cylinder and clutch master cylinder, needing to exert a lot more hydraulic pressure with the twin disc clutch setups. I still haven’t decided on going after a Tick Performance adjustable CMC, or any of the Ideal Garage modified OEM CMC’s (backstock, discontinued). I also see a Ram hydraulic clutch pedal adjuster, but I’m not sure if that’s worth getting either. I’m also not 100% exactly how the mechanism works, but I was mainly concerned about the OEM hydraulic clutch cylinders, not holding up over time with a dual clutch disc setup.
Also, I see a lot of the aftermarket eBay flywheels, offering a range of steel/chromoly ones, with some having cutouts (presumably for weight savings?), although they weren’t labeled as “lightweight”? Are billet aluminum flywheels the only ones that are mostly lightweight? I figured some of the flywheels that are paired with the clutch kits, are made specifically for that particular clutch, so… I also wonder if any of these require the CSC to be properly shimmed in the trans. I’ve heard about some people “over-extending” the clutch slave cylinder and “blowing them out”.
