Compressors, water and rust

So I've had a Craftsman upright 5.5hp compressor for about 20 years and it works well, sometimes I even remember to drain it!

Drained it tonight and got a cup of rusty water for the first time. Huh. So I'm wondering about putting some oil into the tank or some other treatment along with a new drain valve. I only use it to air up tires or run air tools occasionally so I don't see how oil could hurt. Anybody done this?
