Is a Camaro in Hand (on the lot) Worth 2 in the Bush (on order)?
Answer: if it's an ABM 2LT RS - ABSOLUTELY YES!
Been a helluva past week for me, but happy ending. Sorry for the long story - but I gotta tell it ...
My ABM 2LT RS order was not looking good as of last Tue., the 10th, stuck at 1100. LT RS constraint was killing me, ABM phaseout as of TPW 11/30 was looming large. I had my heart set on ABM and my exact options. I didn't have another color that was even a close second to ABM.
My dealer said 11/10 was pretty much my drop dead date. I had opened a case file w/ GM customer service to plead my case. I messaged the "Tell Fritz" forum a couple of times and pleaded my case w/ someone from the GM executive office who had responded. As of 11/9, nothing positive was happening. People were getting pissed at me because I was pushing hard to try to make something happen. I was telling anyone who would listen that this situation was poor customer service. I threatened to buy a Mustang and never purchase a GM vehicle again. When I first ordered, I figured my chances were 50-50 I'd make it. Last Tue., I figured my chances were down to about 2%.
Then there was divine intervention. On a whim, I searched the GM site Mon. night 11/9 and an ABM 2LT RS A6/Grey/ Sunroof - my exact freakin' order except the spare tire was included - popped up at a dealership 11 miles from my house! Was this a cruel tease - some kind of mistake? I direct-searched the local dealer inventory - no hit! Why was that - how come GM said the dealer had it but the dealer themselves were not listing it? Was it already sold? I emailed the internet sales guy (it was 2am) - didn't sleep well that night.
On Tue. 11/10, found out the car indeed was at the lot! They just got it off the truck the day before. Yes, God had dropped my car 11 miles from my house at a different dealer than I had ordered from. Got the status updates from my original dealer - no movement on my order - still stuck at 1100. Went down to Durand Chevrolet Tue. night after work, negotiated a comparable deal to what I had ordered, and put the deposit down that night. What a sigh of relief!
Had planned to put my written notice to cancel my order in the mail on Wed. 11/11, but it was Veterans Day - no mail. I didn't work that day. Since my order was stuck at 1100, figured there'd be no harm in waiting a day to mail it then call the dealer.
So I get into work on Thu. 11/12 and what do I see - an email from my original dealer saying he had great news - my order was being picked up - moved to status 2500! Wouldn't you know it - now I feel conflicted because the original dealer had been very good and I felt bad about not giving them my business.
I talked to both dealers and to their credit, they were both very good about it - I had my choice on which way to go. I figured the Camaro "in hand" - on the lot - was the sure thing. There was still some risk with the order - who knows what might go wrong. Even though the dealer said I had a TPW of 12/7 - that GM was trying to honor all customer orders for ABMs (which is what I had been pleading for) - what if there were more delays? What if it wasn't built prior to the holiday shutdown?
So I picked up my miracle car on Friday night and am enjoying every minute of it. According to spastic squirrel, this is the only ABM 2LT RS A6/Grey/ Sunroof delivered to a MA dealer - period. How lucky was that? I suppose my original order will be the second one delivered in MA. So if you are around the New England area and are looking for an ABM 2LT, call Aaron Markella at Best Chevrolet in Hingham, MA at 781-749-1950 and tell him Jim said to give you a good deal.
Love this car! And all is forgiven with GM. And everyone lived happily ever after (except the people who make Mustangs).
