AF only required credit checks if:

If you are/ or were ever married
If you disclose bad credit when answering the Security Questions. I.E. 30 day+ late payments on anything. and of course Bankruptcy.
And all Officer's receive credit checks regardless of age, etc.

Unless the AF recruiter is lying (which I doubt cause he's a good guy) they started doing credit checks on everybody now. You are right though, it didn't used to be on everyone. Even the Navy has started implementing credit checks for all jobs that require a TS clearance.
