I gotta say this doesn't hold true anymore. I work for one of the carriers that serves several Manufacturers. And when we have any vehicle damaged where a structural or welded part is damaged (not light repairable paint scratches) but bent, dented, weld separation, gouged, or similar damages, the vehicle is scrapped.
I know my company has bought several of those vehicles and shredded them so none of the parts reach the street.
Wasn't in that side of the business back in '89.
