Not a dumb question at all... Yes, you can shift between modes on the fly... I do it quite regularly... If you are in paddle/M mode the only way to get back to sport mode is to shift up into D and then back into M and then you are back in Sport mode.... Also I will shift up N for a few revs (
) and then back into D/M while cruising down the street.. Shifts back into gear very smoothly and so far no adverse effect...
