I asked the same questions a while back in the audio whatever group. I got this reply from someone. Basically it is possible for for anyone other than GM it would be really really difficult. But man would it be nice!!!

"All of the data is on the vehicle bus, so it is there, but in each module, there are settings for what module listens to what particular vehicle message and if the module isn't on the list for a message, it ignores it. So, I think the DIC since it isn't displaying the temperature, isn't looking for that particular message, so it would be fairly difficult to hack into the lower-level code and make that change in the DIC.

The software is definitely updatable, but generally only by using the TechTool. It has to get the modules into a special programming state so they're ready to receive the new data. I also have no idea in what language or what program those engineers wrote the DIC or radio code in.

As for the locks, that's controlled by the body control module I believe. That's probably an easier change to make, but may be a bit difficult to do without the source code."
