My 97 SS was a 6 speed, and I loved it. Then some clown decided to back into it at a 3 way stop and I ended up trading it in after some piss poor repairs. I'd loved the Solstice since I first saw one, and managed to get a deal on an '07 GXP last January, only problem was it was automatic (only 2,200 miles on it tho).
I figured that given the rather cramped cockpit (I'm 6'2", the car is more fun with the top down!) I wouldn't miss it too much. But I was wrong. The delay between it hesitating to find a gear and the turbo lag make it a lot less 'fun' than the SS was. I miss the bottom end torque, and especially knowing that when I got on it out of a corner I wasn't going to wait 1...2...3... for the right gear and the power to come online.
I'm hoping to get an SS this fall again, but I'd like to hear from the automatic owners here (especially those that consider themselves proficient with a stick) how it works coming out of corner, or when you decide to punch it.
How does the downshifting work? If I'm entering a corner and want to make sure the car is in 2nd before I get into the gas, can I 'manually' get the automatic into the gear I want before I get on the gas? My understanding is the auto will rev-match to smoothly downshift, but I'd love to hear opinions about how well it works.
