I think the smarting thing would be to TRY some of the products and see if it is hype or actually provides results. Then, you can formulate an informed opinion (good or bad) and share it with others.

Not true as I think you are trying to generalize. If an equally good product is available anywhere or is proven better than the alternative...I'll get it (craftsman, snap-on, etc...).
Hype comes when an ok product (ie. Zaino) it made out to be somehow superior to other products simply because it gives a shine and is not OTC, simply because you pay more for it, or simply because it comes in boring bottles with fast sounding names (z-2, z-5, z-fx, AcCeLeRaToR). There is nothing in Zaino that you can't find in any wax or polish brand. My goal here is to do exactly what you are saying and find an OTC product that is just as good as the infamous Zaino where I don't have to send off $200 plus shipping for a 'system' to wax my car. I need a clay bar, some wax and that is it. I don't need bee-imbeded detailing spray, Grand Finale Super Spray, Ultra Clean Fresh Scent Gloss Enhancer Spray, Super-duper window cleaner, micro grit remover, Fusion Dual Action foaming spiral remover, skunk smell remover, leather seat tanning lotion or camel skinned drying towels. I should be able get by with the basics and find a clay bar and good wax locally and skip all the ridiculous add-ons that sound like a women's cosmetic counter.
With this discussion, I hope others will then benefit and save time/money too. I've never implied that I want the cheapest, but Zaino-ites are always so defensive about their overly complicated 'system' reputation. So I'll say it; here it is: Zaino works just fine!!! But, just because I don't want to use Zaino doesn't mean that I don't like my car, nor that I want the cheap way out, nor that I'm some sort of waxing rebellious zealot. I don't want to 'follow the crowd' on this one, because I think others also want an good, local alternative that is absolutely just as good as the almighty Zaino.

This forum has been far too biased with Zaino and it needs noted alternatives.

We shall see my friend, we shall see... And I will bask in the sun with a beer as the Zaino-ites scrub the need less lotions and potions into the surface all day long!!! Ahhh ha ha ha
