They originally made the decision when there were 9 brands. The surveys they did showed many people did not realize that X brand was a GM brand. People would say "I love this car" in the same sentence as "I'd never buy a GM".
Thus they wanted to put a GM on each of the 9 brands. When they cut 5 of the 9 brands it was decided the decision to push the overall GM name was not necessary.
They used up the remaining inventory of the "chicklets", which is why they stopped being put on the Camaro in the middle of the model year.
This has been documented in several articles I've read over the last year.

Also it saved GM something like 3 million a yr or some ridiculious amount of money which was all in part of the bankruptcy agreements.
