It's competetive pricing for the car they are making and while I believe they are on the high end of the range that will allow them the volumes being talked about, but they are in the range.

Automatic transmission powertrains inherently have a bit more power loss which normally puts them behind on mpg's, and Chevy can play with gearing and a few other silly tricks like skipshift to keep the mpg numbers up. If you look at the Corvette and it's very similiar LS3 powertrain the manual is rated 1mpg higher than the auto. The 'vette doesn't have AFM for the auto though, and from what I've seen AFM is probably good for ~1 mpg on the EPA testing which should result in basically the same mpg's for either transmission.
