OK so I read-up on these radios. Seems pretty much whatever you have they'll be compatible.
GMRS = General Mobil Radio Service; operates on channels 1-7 & 15-22 on most radios and this option can transmit in hi & lo modes increasing range.
FRS = Family Radio Service; operates on channels 1-14 with 8-14 being exclusive to FRS; operates only on lo power hence lower range
The exclusivity of the FRS channels is important b/c in the US you technically need a license to use the GMRS channels whereas FRS you do not. In Canada no license is required for either.
Some brands use different channel numbering systems but the 1-22 range is motorola and seems pretty common.
In order to communicate with a group, obviously everyone needs to be on the same channel. But in addition to this everyone must have the same Interference Eliminator code (kinda like a channel within the channel). Not all radios have this feature - so if that's true in our group then we just set this one to 0 (zero).
That's about it. Other fancy features vary by brand and are largely there to annoy you. I just realized that my radios can be charged through a mini USB plug so I can charge them through the center console if needed
Seems like it doesn't matter what advertised range you have, someone always complains that the range sucks. So TJ... you need to keep up
