so i went to the dealership i've been visiting for a while and i ask for the salesman always talk to. i was told he no longer works there because he's moving. my first thought, "oh crap, now i'm not going to get a good deal". so i talk to the guy who approached me on the lot, says he'd be glad to help and he wants me to buy this car so he'll help me out anyway possible.
he walks me to his cubicle asks me questions, i fill out the sheet with my specifics, "1SS/ RS package" and he goes to input it in the computer. he goes back and forth between me and the other office a couple of times asking me additional questions. then he comes back with the quote. $33,000 plus $3500 markup. i told him i don't think so, he asks why, i say price. he asks what i was thinking, i told him more like $30,000, i was aiming low thinking i was going into the back and forth number game. he leaves for a bit and comes back saying he can't do that, the price is as is. i said "what about MSRP? can you work with me?" he says "that's MSRP + markup. is there something wrong?" i said "markup", i'm not paying that. is there anything your manager can do?" he says "that's the manager says. we need to make money and you won't find a better deal. and if i wait i'm only going to be paying higher markups." i say "ok, thank you very much for your time. good bye."
so i called the salesman i've been talking to for months. he says he is no longer moving and he'll be in on Monday. i told him what happened and he says that sucks and he'll work with me when he gets back to work next week, but he doesn't know what markup will be and he's not sure what will happen.
so i go to another dealer on the other side of the island. first thing i ask is "are you taking orders for the Camaro, do you have anymore allotments, and are there markups?" he says "hang on, i have to check, but i think we have one". my first thought, (not good, he checking to see how he can rip me off). he comes back and says, "good news, we have 1 left of 8. we can put an order in for you. and the best news, we don't do markups."
so we get to work. they run the numbers. and hey, ta-da!!! 1SS/RS at MSRP. i almost flipped, i was so happy. so they wrote the contract, i looked at it, noticed one thing i didn't like. "price quoted only, subject to change". so i had them rewrite this. "price based on MSRP, determined by GM". i hope that means MSRP in the end? sounded good at the time. anyways, i signed the paper got my receipt and walked out happy with the price on the paper saying $31,445.
on a side note, i never realized how expensive all the license, tax, documentation and registration fees were on a new car
