I tried my old trunk rack the other day and it turns out there isn't enough of a lip on the glass side of the trunk lid for a rack to hook on to.

Also on your other point, not only would a mountain bike not fit through that hole taken apart, but you'd end up breaking off your derailer and probably messing up your brakes. And who has the extra half hour to take your bike apart and put it back together. Maybe for a rare trip (i took my bike apart to fit it in the trunk of my RX-8 when I drove from Boston to Maryland for a week) but for a regular thing, thats crazy. Plus you'd end up with so much dirt in your car... ugh
