I know it is not exactly the same. Way back when, my 2nd car was VW Bug, drove that sucker without a clutch for a year. Would start it in gear and shift without any problems. It got to be a pain at lights and hills (using the parking brake).

I wasn't a wrench back then, so it took me a year to actually check why I didn't have a clutch. Turns out the adjustment wing-nut by the bell housing had simply fallen off. Less than a buck and in 15 minutes the clutch was working again.
