You won't hurt anything as long as you don't clash the gears. Basically you are matching the engine speed with the driveline speed in a given gear. The clutch will live forever if you do it forever..but technically you can't.

I always slip the trans out of gear into neutral when I slow to a stop. If you feather the throttle it slips right out. And, if you don't actually have to come to a complete stop, you can easily slip it into first gear. Just beware if you miss your "opportunity" you'll clash the gears. Then, go back to basics.
