Seems to happen when:
- reversing
- clutch pedal pressed down all the way
- wheel turned to right
I think it might have happend once when going straight, but seems more often when turning wheel to the right.
It also seems to only happen when the car free-rolls down a hill.
When you slightly slip the clutch, the grinding seems to disappear.
Hmm, I'll take to a parking garage sometimes and see when else it happens. (Like, turn wheel to left? on level ground? going forward? How long does it last? Dunno... didn't want to find out!)

I couldn't have described it any better myself. Mine only does this every once in awhile when backing out of the garage (downhill) and turning the wheel very slightly to the right. The first time it happened I almost thought I didn't have the shifter all the way in reverse...but the clutch was all the way to the floor so it was only rolling at that point.
Of course, I did mention it to my dealer when I took my car in for the HVAC update but they were unable to reproduce the issue. I wasn't expecting it to be fixed, but I did want to have it documented incase anything does break.
