When I bought my car I asked if I should put in higher octane. They said no, to keep it at 87 - it's what the engine is made for. If you're going to switch, you should do it from the start. In my dad's 928 he switched octane randomly after having the car for years and now can't switch back because his idle rev is jacked up. Also, the mechanics at the dealership can tell if you've been running the improper octane, I don't know if they'll complain if you're running higher octane in a v6, but you'll have warranty issues if you run 87 or 91 in a v8.
