I drove a 2011 Mustang 5.0
First off I'm a car guy I like all car makes (well maybe not all) yet I'm partial to Chevy. Like you I've been reading all those stories and tests on the 2011 Mustang 5.0. I have to tell you don't believe everything you read. Almost all the 2011 5.0 Mustangs tested are "ringers". Their showroom version will not match the numbers in the majority of tests. Some magazine are partial to Ford hence you can't believe what they print, hint trending motors you get the picture.
What I mean by a ringer, those 5.0's have been optimized to go fast and in some cases some Ford magic was done to them, they have optimal gearing, most all 5.0's come with 3.31 gears unless optioned for a 3.55 and 3.73, most have been dyno'ed before tested, remember the variable cam timing is to produce good emissions and gas mileage, in stock form the the variable timing will hold performance back. There are other go fast goodies done to the 5.0. I really feel the Ford Mustang has taken such a beating by the 2010 Camaro Ford can't afford to show their true colors, everyone remembers the Ford built Cobra Mustangs a few years back where the engines when dyno'ed never met Ford's claimed hp and 412 hp from only 5 liters is pushing it.
Okay driving the 5.0 (keep in mind I own 2010 SS Camaro with a few bolt ons) the 2011 5.0 is a fun car, the 6-speed manual shifts much smoother then the SS, it is a much smaller car, the seat of the pants acceleration just doesn't have the grunt of the SS, disc brakes are much smaller hence stopping is poorer. I know the SS will beat the 5.0 in the 1/4 mi right off the showroom floor.
There is one area the 5.0 cannot match the 2010 Camaro and that is in engine compartment space, the engine bay of the 2011 Mustang is a "nightmare" it looks like an over stuffed suitcase. This will cause high engine bay temperatures not to mention no do it yourself modifications.
