Some help and insight on this ambient door lighting

Ok so im doing the mod where you extend the lighting effect in the doors all the way to the dash. Have been following the instructions from Michael Cooper. very good instructions. But i hit a snag. i have sanded and cant seem to get the paint off and have the light shine where the panel turns the corner and is covered by the dash when the door is shut. yes i know you cant see it when its shut but it just guarantees that there should be no gap when it ends at the door and when i do the lights in the dash. Besides the visual gap that there is since the trim pieces dont exactly but right up. Here are pictures and maybe you can tell me that i need to sand in a different area:
