The fact ramains the same. Octane alone does not add a single HP. Octane does allow for tuning in more HP. GM could tune the car from the factory for 100 octane but it would not be economical and availability of 100 octane fuel sucks for the everyday driver. Buy a new Camaro, take it to a dyno, then add 100 octane. If the computer will "auto tune" as some people are eluding to, I would still be surprised to see more than very minimal gains. Do a ton of aftermarket improvements and you are still getting gains from the equipment and the tune, not directly from octane.

Look the bottom line is - can you do the above without high octane fuel? You could very well use the same argument for superchargers.
