R & D? These are off the shelf parts on a platform they already have. I would think the cost is at a minimum. I feel the GT500 is the goal, and if they over shoot it on the price, they will not sell. Why would anyone buy a Z or whatever its called at price X, when they can get a GT500 for less than X. Brand loyalty? Eh! Don't think so. It doesn't make sense, Gm knows this. It will perform and be priced similar to the 500 or it will be a bust.

Yes, those are retail based prices, but don't we buy cars at retail price as well? As for the GT500, it retails for a hair under $50k.
Throwing a bunch of parts onto a car changes a lot of things. Things need to be tweaked and tuned to make it feel like a complete car and not something pieced together from a parts catalogue in some guys garage. Getting the engine and exhaust sound just right, getting the steering feel right, getting the right balance between ride and handling with the suspension, and hundreds of other little things (if not thousands). Plus they have to do emissions testing, safety testing, reliability testing, bench marking ... it adds up.
