Yes, the looks are very subjective. Most people dislike the nose. I personally used to dislike them until I saw them up close. When you see them for real, you either begin to like them, or hate them even more...
As for the performance, it is stunning for a "street legal" 1993 era car. 450hp back in 1994 was unheard of, and only a Ferrari F40 made close to that. Take into consideration that they are noise and emissions legal, and they are very impressive.
The engines are really built nicely, with forged eagle H-beam rods, forged Callies crank, forged Cosworth pistons, Oliver splayed 4 bolt mains, CNC machined ports and combustion chambers, and stainless 1 3/4 headers.
Performance was great for the day, and I have run the 95 convertible at 12.87 at 109. While not a blistering time, it was acheived with a heavy 6 speed convertible that just wants to roast tires instead of launch.
One of the issues it has at the track is the very flat and broad torque curve. At just 3000 rpm, one of my Callaways is putting down 407ft lbs tq, so getting any traction out of the stock tires is very difficult. I guess I should toss a set of DRs on it to see some better times.
But the straight line performance was just one of the aspects Callaway went for. The handling is greatly improved with Callaway suspension mods which include, Koni adjustable shocks, boxed trailing arms, urathane bushings, panhard bar, strut tower brace, and lowered springs.
The braking is also phenomenal, with Brembo F40 front calipers lifted straight off of the hottest Ferrari of the day. Together with the OZ Monte Carlos, or the Bridgestone RunFlat wheels and tires, the reduced unsprung weight, recalibrated syspension, and enormous brakes and gobs of power, Callaway turned the Camaro into a real world sports car, instead of just a drag strip toy.
That is why Callaway really wanted to make an AeroBody that really set it apart from the standard Camaro. While it is still very subjective, it is certainly distinctive, and I am sure that they will become very rare and collectible in the future. There are only 17 AeroBody C8s total.
And remember, Baldwin Motion Corvettes were considered hideous by most in their day...
