Well, compared with the cost of OTHER 500hp cars on the market, I'd say that is DAMN affordable! Think about it, what OTHER cars offer 500+hp at a reasonable price?
-Ford Shelby GT500... sure if you can GET one (+dealer mark up, + Shelby name markup = good luck!)

Here is some perspective, my own little list of cars with 500hp or more:
BMW M5 - ~$100K
Dodge Viper -~$85K
Corvette Z06 -~$78K
Mercedes CL 63 AMG Black Series -~$100K
Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano ???$!
Bently Continental GT
Bugatti Veyron...
Anyway, you get the idea. 500hp is WORTH $45K and some of us are ready and willing to pay that. Its not going to be the ONLY V8 offered... I'm sure the L76 from the G8 will be the base V8 (and can be had for under 30K).
Either way, once your above 450hp, the money becomes less of an issue because there is SO LITTLE ELSE TO COMPETE WITH. What else can you get for $45K NEW that has 500hp? Not much that's for sure.
GM isn't going to screw us. They WILL have an affordable V8.. its just NOT going to be the one with 500hp.
