I canned the dealer that sold me the car in favor of this fine dealership, Royal Chevrolet in Lasalle. I struck a common cord with the senior mechanic that was to drop the pan on this coming Monday. He's an old biker (as am I) who loves engines. (he just bought a used Softail)
He told me that the only other LLT's he had opened had pulled timing chains. Seems the early ones had some chains that loosened up over time. Also, he told me of a whole series of 3800's that had no cross drilling in the crank at the front and rear bearing caps. All those GM customers had a new engine in thier car ownership life.
He was not concerned about the procedure and he reassured me it was for the best. He also stated that it's far better than mucking around in the block as GM would ship a brand new engine, in a crate with oil already in it.
I plan on giving him a digital camera to snap important shots during the process. Let's see what the inside of this LLT looks like now! He expects metal shavings in the pan...
Best 2 all,
eB

Used 75 Camaro = $3500
Rolling restoration over 10 years = $5000
$5 of gas burned in 10 seconds = Priceless!
