My understanding of the forging process is that the round "blank" is poured into a mold, but while it's still molten to a degree they forge it by some type of impact, like dropping it onto an anvil or something. It's not too different from the old blacksmith hammering a glowing horseshoe--the hammering condenses the metal molecules, putting them closer together and molecularly aligning them in a manner that makes the resulting piece much stronger than just a cast piece.
Not that I'm a metallurgist or anything, so maybe I'm completely up in the night.
