The 3.8 was introduced an an optional motor in 1996.
The current direct injected 3.6 makes 312hp (amazing for a 6) and still puts down 29 mpg. What more do you want? I think they nailed it with this motor. It really is an unprecedented mix of power and economy for a entry level car. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
