With a truck and a boat where it gets cold, I know of a few cracked diff housings from water getting in during summer boat launches and freezing in winter. If the breather tubes are short, the hot diff (from towing) will suck in water when the water cools it rapidly. Granted, these were older trucks, but there are cases where it is necessary... And changing fluids never hurts.
