Something you COULD try to make it project more is to find a small flashlight and take the projector cone out of it and mount that inside the box with the LED at it's focal point. It would take a little bit of trial and error to get the LED set in at the focal point but it's certainly possible without much trouble. That way you don't have to worry about multiple sources because the cone is designed to project light from a point source.
