OK....
On a car with trunk hinges obviously running it along the hinge is fine...it has support and protection from the hinge.
On a car with no internal hinge something else needs to be done. That is a weak spot gentleman, no matter how we try to justify why it is the way it is.
The IVER car was a proper implementation in the case of external hinges. The solution there would be to have the opening on the trunk lid be ABOVE the trunk gasket, not below and run into it's own gromet on the body.
We can beat this to death I guess, like I said, we'll just have to see what can be engineered by the DIYer to resolve. I may get fancy and do up a carbon fiber (or aluminum) "arm" to protect it similar to the hinge inside the trunk method. I'll have to see it in person to figure out what it'll take.
