It's true the Hurst short throw will be a must-have mod, as they are much more precise and solid-feeling than the stock shifter, not to mention the shorter throw.
However, it does depend on the application as far as how much effort they can be compared to stock. I have one in my '05 Mustang GT, and I do love it, but it is a super high effort to move (compared to stock). Car And Driver tested the Shelby GT (with factory Hurst short throw shifter) in the June 2007 issue and said this:
"The Shelby also drew gripes for the Hurst shifter, which is so high-effort that it's difficult to make two-to-three and four-to-five upshifts."
Mine has been in the car for 3 years now and after being fully broken in, I would not say the 2-3 and 4-5 upshifts are difficult at all. I would say that simply putting the shifter into 1st gear after stopping is sometimes a pain. But, Shifty is correct -- it's not like moving a 150 lb rock with your toe. More like moving a 10 lb rock.
