This type of door handle used to be on the W-body coupes back in the day. We called them the "beer tap handle" for obvious reasons.
It's a nice way to make a 4 door look more like a 2 door. Gives a more coupe-ish look.
I'm still surprised it is simply the Cruze Powertrains in a smaller car.
I just went to Chevrolet.com and a loaded 2LT Aveo is just under $18,000. But if we get an LTZ Sonic with a 1.4 L Turbo and 6 speed trans instead of todays 5 speed, I think you can guess that a loaded Sonic LTZ would be over 20. It's simply a much better car with better powertrains.

If you're referring to mid 90s W bodies then I've got a pair of those handles sitting out in the street on Chew Toy (96 Monte Z34). Has a lot more give than the Trans Am's handle.
Any word on them offering the 1.4T and 6spd on the 1LT? If it's one thing that I'm finding with the T/A.. it's that if my hand stays shoved in the console area shifting and flicking through channels on the radio, I don't need no stinkin steering wheel controls.
