The first gens were decent in stock form. New tires and suspension upgrades along with some easy engine mods you can do yourself get it running with the 40-year old newer rides and you aren't seeing one at every turn.
And the weak link on the manual v6 car isn't going to be the transmission, but I fear the clutch.
