In most European countries, diesel costs less than gas. I think here in Michigan for example, Diesel is an extra 10% over gasoline due to the tax structure. So a Cruze Eco or Focus XFE (or whatever they are calling it) with a diesel would have to pull 45, 46 mpg to be even. And that doesn't consider that a diesel engine option costs more to purchase, requires urea injection to meet modern U.S. emissions standards so over all it would have to do 50 plus mpg to come close to being cost effective.
