There is some reason the studs cost more than normal, at least. The 14mm x 1.5 stud is new to the performance market, having only been used on fullsize SUV's and trucks before. Most of the previous GM performance cars still use the 12mm x 1.5 thread, which is more common now. I remember when the 12mm studs first came out, they were also expensive. Now they are cheap due to production numbers. In time, the 14mm studs will come down in price (hopefully).

But you are correct, nothing keeps you from drilling the holes to fit the 1/2" studs or bigger.
