I always stick a 2x4 on top of the floor jack. About 3- 4 ft long, long enough to span the distance between the frame rails. Your still lifting in the center of the 2nd cross member. The 2x4 just spreads out the weight load, and prevents mucking up the center of the crossmember. Then, of course, jackstands once it is up high enough.
